Burkett Ancient Mystery cults

Walter Burkett, Ancient Mystery Cults, Harvard University Press,Cambridge, London, 1987 1987- dated but Walter Burkett is a respected researcher p 2 thank you Mr Burkett- mystery religions are not late ( Hellenic or Imperial) Although we know some of them were put into Rome in the later stages they have a much earlier history, Eleusis from at least 6th C BCE not oriental- Isis from Egypt, Mithras from Iran and Magna Mater is Phyrigian p 3- - not spiritual and not a precursor to Christianity ( this is a mistake as the mystery religions were written about from the Christian point of view). Burkett says that Mithraism was not a religion, hence the use of the word cult I presume- is this demeaning the followers of Mithras and Christian based to deny them the word religion???

Instead, scholars have predominantly focussed on isolated test cases while theoretically grounding their work in the theories of sociologists like Georg Simmel (1906) and Erving Goffman (1956). This dissertation is a first attempt at advancing an updated theory of secrecy in religion which is rooted in the experimental study of human behaviour.
